A tote is an unusual piece of merchandise: it is a product you can sell and a moving billboard at the same time. T-shirts come out at weekends, mugs stay on a desk — but a bag leaves the house with its owner every day.

The trade-off is that if it is not good enough, it never leaves the house at all. This guide is for brands making their first one.

Answer these three first and the rest gets easy

1. Are you selling it or giving it away? If selling, work out the retail price while choosing the model, not after the stock arrives. If giving, decide when: a spend threshold, a launch, or a particular group of customers.

2. Who will carry it? Regulars who already know you and passers-by who have just met your brand see the same bag differently. The first group wants to be seen using you. The second just wants a good bag.

3. Where will it live? A shop counter, an online store, a market stall, or tucked into shipping boxes as a gift. If it ships inside a parcel, the bag's size and weight affect your own postage.

Answer those three and the model, the size and the quantity mostly answer themselves.

How many to start with

Our minimum is 50 pieces across every model. There is a second threshold worth knowing early, because it changes what you need to bring us.

  • Start at 50 if you already have artwork and we adapt it — placing a logo, matching your CI colours, recomposing it for the bag panel
  • Start at 200 if you want artwork designed from scratch

There is no separate design fee in either case. Design is included in the bag price.

For a young brand, 50 is enough to test the market without sitting on stock. If it sells out and you want more, we keep your files, so a second run needs nothing resent.

Files to prepare

  • Production files are AI, PDF or PNG at 150–300 DPI
  • The original logo — vector (AI or PDF) is best, because it scales without losing edge
  • Your brand colour codes — if you have a CI guideline, send it

You do not need all of that to ask for a quote. The form accepts AI, PDF, PNG, JPG, SVG and ZIP, up to 3 files of 10 MB each, so the JPG logo you already have is enough to start. If the resolution turns out to be too low for production, we will ask for the original before we make the proof. The full details are in preparing artwork for a sharp print.

The background colour comes from the print, not from dyed cloth, so a logo sits on an exact brand colour

The colour thing brands usually get wrong

Our base fabric is white and the whole colour comes from the print, not from dyed cloth. That sounds technical, but it affects you twice.

The upside is that you never wait for fabric in your CI colour, and you are not limited to whatever colours a mill happens to stock. Whatever background you want goes into the design file.

The thing to know is that handle colour is chosen separately and is a different decision from the printed background. Handles that contrast with the background usually read as a designed object rather than a printed one. On the Elite model there is also a scarf tie and bow to choose.

Designing something people want to carry

This is where most merch goes wrong — not in print quality, but in design decisions.

  • The artwork should stand on its own. Remove the logo: if the bag is still good, you are on the right track. If it leaves an empty background, you have made a billboard, not a bag.
  • The logo does not need to be big. People who know your brand recognise a small mark. People who do not will not be won over by a large one.
  • Design for how it hangs, not how it lies flat. A bag is seen hanging at someone's side, where the lower half is often hidden by an arm and a hip. Keep what matters toward the top.
  • Respect the margins. Leave 1 cm clear at the left and right edges, and an inch up from the base if you are placing text. The stitch line at the opening sits about 1.5 inches down; background artwork can run under it, but keep logos clear.

To see it quickly, drop your artwork into the design studio. No sign-up needed.

What brands ask on their first run

  • Can you sew in a brand label? Yes, from 500 pieces, as a paid option listed separately on the quote.
  • Can you make printed bags or boxes to pack them in? No, we do not make custom packaging. Every bag is individually packed in a clear bag, included in the price.
  • Can we see a real one before the full run? Every job gets a computer proof within 3–5 working days of the deposit. A print test on the real fabric starts at 200 pieces, and a full sample bag at 500.
  • How long does it take? Roughly 2–6 weeks from the approved design to delivery, depending on the queue.
  • How does payment work? A 50% deposit starts the job and the remaining 50% is due before delivery. We always send photographs of the finished bags before asking for that final payment.
  • Do you ship abroad? Yes — nationwide and internationally.
